MURAL SCHOOL is a new opportunity in Summer 2024 where experienced painters go big like never before. This immersive experience is tailored for artists ready to expand their presence in a significant way. Our MURAL SCHOOL intensive workshop provides a supportive environment for creating, planning, and producing a finished, publicly viewable mural in Garden City, Idaho, at The Common Well.

Instructor Jay Smith has a passion for bringing local communities together through art, and bringing local artists together through community. Smith truly loves helping new and burgeoning artists learn and grow in their creativity, encouraging them to bring their art into public spaces. He brings humility and heart to his artistic practice — some of Boise’s most distinctive creative entrepreneurs have turned to Jay Smith, commissioning him to convey meaning and a sense of place through the medium of paint. His work graces some of Boise beloved community landmarks, including Salvage Sisters and Son, Hap Hap Lounge, Bill’s on Broadway, Bittercreek Alehouse, Red Feather Lounge, Push & Pour, Treefort Music Hall, Treefort Music Festival, Shadow Puppet, Wildflower Flower Shop, Flowers at Will, and Woodland Empire. With an engaging, supportive and enthusiastic teaching style, he is excited to work with MURAL SCHOOL students in July.

Internationally-commissioned Muralist / Washington, DC
Born in Belarus and trained in St. Petersburg, Yulia Avgustinovich is a sought-after muralist who works across the United States and Europe. In the United States she’s created murals in California, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, Wyoming and Maryland. She has accomplished ambitious murals for Universities, recreational centers, art funds and in the private sector. “There is nothing I love more than creating art for people’s homes, decorating public spaces and seeing this transform a community's appreciation for their city or home,” she says, “That’s what inspires me and makes me feel at my best as a muralist.” In June 2020 Alexa Rose Foundation unveiled its first public artwork—an ambitious 80-foot mural: SYMBOLS OF IDAHO by Avgustinovich, which be viewed on the historic Jefferson Place building in Boise. Her delicate, nature-centric designs are all hand painted, as she completed the ambitious 80-foot mural in just 30 days at the height of Idaho’s summer heat. Her latest project in Idaho was Caldwell’s first large-scale mural, painted in October 2023 and may be viewed in Caldwell at Tilium near Indian Creek.
Hawk Sahlein
Sector Seventeen, Owner / Boise, Idaho
Hawk Sahlein is a graffiti-based aerosol muralist and co-founder of Sector Seventeen, a collective of artists in Idaho formed in 2005. This collaboration focuses on aerosol art and painting, with a studio in Garden City where artists and friends gather to exchange ideas and create. Hawk’s work includes murals at Rhodes Park and City Center Plaza among many others, and his work portfolio has expanded in the United States.
